Fixated on a specific day - the Blue Monday

Whenever I hear that the Blue Monday is coming I smile to myself thinking that we Poles have at least one day a year to justify our never endless grumbling. I do not deny that many of us have to struggle with various problems. Futhermore, the weather is awful and we get less daylight. But there is a lot of things to smile about! My simple advice is: if you are feeling down in the dumps today try to think that this day could not be given for you at all and think of how beautiful is the world we live in. The most depressing day is when we start to complain about everything and not when the media tell it to us.

Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without

This saying, which was probably coined in the early 20th century, was helping poor imigrants getting into the USA make ends meet. Then it was repeating during the Great Depression and the World War II. Nowadays it is using by followers of social movement called "voluntary simplicity" and seems to be a good way of practising a frugal lifestyle.

"Use it up" means that all the goods which we already have, need to be consume before we decide to buy new staff. It refers to any area of our life and buck the wastefulness.

"Wear it out" is a little bit similar to the first tip and assumes that we shouldn't throw utilizable devices away just because a new model appeared on the market. Furthermore it encourages us to give the second life to the old things and to be creative in finding new usage of different items.

"Make it do" means that we could content ourself with what we possess. There is a plenty of solutions instead of purchasing new products.

"Do without" is an essence of simplicity. It make us realize that we can live without the immediate satisfaction of our needs.

I am curious about your opinion. What do you think about the popular sentence : "less is more"? Waiting for your comments :)

The Imitation Game

I would like to share with you my impressions after watching The Imitation Game. I really like movies based on the true story so for a Friday evening I chose just this one.
The plot is based on the story of deciphering German machine used during World War II which was called Enigma. The main chacaracter Alan Turing, who is a mathematician and cryptographer, helps crack the Enigma code. He has his own vision which leads him to construct an innovative machine which will be able to demystify the working of Nazi's Enigma.

In the background of this engrossing story appears another thread that concerns the homosexuality. After the war Alan Turing was prosecuted for homosexual relations and impelled to undergo a hormonal therapy and thereby he committed suicide. In the old days homosexuals were jailed in England. Some of them could choose to take hormons instead of imprisonment. Despite Turing's enormous contributions to the war he had to suffer due to intolerance.

I appreciate the way in that two topics were presented in the movie. The thread of deciphering the Enigma reflects clearly the main facts of its history. When it comes to the second topic, they put it in a particular framework and present it in a gentle way nonetheless, straight from the shoulder.

If you haven't had a chance to see it yet, I highly recommend it.

What are your New Year's resolutions?

I used to getting started New Year with a shorter or longer list of resolutions. Lose weight, read more, do not waste time ecc. New Year's drive usually evaporated after two weeks and at the end of January all resolutions passed into a history.

This year I decided not to make it more. This doesn't mean that I don't want to turn my life around. It means that I prefer develop some good habits not by making the list but through a hard work. The desire to fill the time which I got is the best motivation. I try to thine own self be true.

And you? Do you make New Year's list of resolutions?
